Depression Therapy

Are You Experiencing A Pervasive Sense of Sadness?

Have you been coping with persistent feelings of despair and hopelessness? Would you describe yourself as:

  • Trapped in a cycle of negative thoughts and emotions?
  • Unable to find the motivation to go to work or school?
  • Uninterested in many of the things that you used to enjoy?

Perhaps your depression takes the form of physical symptoms, like eating irregularly, feeling tired or irritable, or sleeping too much or too little. Maybe you find yourself feeling stuck or empty inside, and you are hoping that therapy for depression can help you make some positive changes in your life.

Depression Can Trap You In A Pattern Of Negative Life Cycles

Some days you might struggle to find the energy or a reason to get out of bed and face the day. You may find yourself stuck in an endless loop of negative thoughts and emotions that make it hard to focus or even function properly. Or you may notice yourself becoming socially withdrawn and disconnected from friends, family, or your partner.

Despite trying to “snap out of it,” you probably also feel helpless because you can’t seem to make any progress on your own. It is even possible that the guilt, low self-worth, and feeling of being unloved have driven you to thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

If you feel trapped by depression and want to learn how to heal, love yourself, and connect with others again, we provide numerous effective treatment options for getting your life back on track. Therapy with Center For Resiliency can help you overcome your depression and feel the way that you deserve to feel: happy.

Everyone Gets Depressed At Some Point In Their Life

Depression is incredibly common, and millions of people across the world struggle with its symptoms every day. Unfortunately, although feeling sad or hopeless at times remains an unavoidable aspect of life, it can be easy for those experiencing symptoms of depression to also feel isolated or alone in their struggle.

However, according to the CDC and the NIMH about 4.4 percent of children and 8.3 percent of adults in the U.S. have been diagnosed with some form of depression at some point in their lives (1) (2). Of course, this only includes those who have received a formal diagnosis, and many others receive no treatment at all for their symptoms.

Symptoms Of Depression Can Often Follow Stressful Life Events

Depressive symptoms can especially emerge following any number of stressful life events, such as marital problems, the death of a loved one, or exposure to trauma (e.g., bullying, neglect, or abuse). These events can be isolated or chronic and long-term, and the length of exposure to the event can influence the length or recurrence of depressive episodes.

Fortunately, though, with depression counseling, you can team up with your therapist to manage your symptoms moving forward. Together, you can embark on the journey to feeling happier, healthier, and more capable of living your life to the fullest.

Depression Therapy Can Help You Get Back On Track

Depression has a lot to do with mindset, which is especially molded by early life experiences. And when your mindset gets stuck in certain negative cycles or patterns, it can be hard to get out of them on your own. But therapy with a dedicated counselor who cares can help you gain insight into your depression and challenge many of the thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors holding you back and keeping you stuck.

Depression counseling with Center For Resiliency can give you a safe space to explore a different way of imagining your future. Although that process may seem scary, with our expertise, compassion, and evidence-based approaches, you will have the chance to see real-life changes.

What You Can Expect From Therapy Sessions

Prior to beginning sessions, you will have the opportunity to speak with your depression therapist some more about your history and your symptoms. You will then work together to build a custom depression treatment plan that addresses your specific situation.

Pulling from various evidence-based practices, during therapy sessions you and your depression counselor will identify your treatment goals—meaning what you would like to change in your life that is within your control. You will also identify how certain unwanted behaviors, beliefs, or other symptoms have developed and what may be maintaining them. Then you will identify any rationale for those symptoms, explore how changing them would benefit you, and pinpoint how to actually make those changes.

Treatment Methods Tailored To Your Unique Needs

Your therapist will have numerous approaches available to treat your depression, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – CBT helps you identify and make changes to negative thoughts, beliefs, and emotions linked to your depression.

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) – DBT targets particularly difficult emotions related to your depression and helps you develop skills for processing them.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – ACT focuses on accepting difficult experiences and emotions as they happen rather than trying to change them.

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) – EFT works to improve the emotional regulation applied toward your depression by identifying negative behaviors linked to your identity.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – EMDR uses eye movement as bilateral stimulation to help process stressful events.

  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) – MI helps you resolve negative feelings in order to develop the motivation to change negative behaviors.

  • Somatic Therapy – Somatic therapy addresses physical symptoms of depression by releasing negative emotions stored in your body.

In our sessions, we will introduce you to skills that you can practice in- and outside of therapy. These skills can help you relax, gain insight, change your negative beliefs into healthier ones, and motivate you to continue pursuing the life you want to live. We also assign homework at the end of each session so you can practice and apply the skills being taught.

Remember: you can recover from depression. And with the right treatment plan in addition to ongoing support from your depression counselor, you can not only recover but also work to prevent relapse moving forward.

You may still have questions about Depression Therapy

I have tried therapy before and I am scared to start again with someone new.

The therapeutic relationship is a privilege for both therapists and patients. Patients discover the power to heal, and therapists are privileged in that someone has trusted them with the confidential details of their life. At CFR, we take that privilege seriously and provide all of our patients with confidential, effective treatment. We approach all of our therapist-patient relationships with respect, good-natured curiosity, and a genuine desire to help.

I do not have out-of-network benefits to cover treatment.

We understand that this can be a barrier to treatment for some, which is why we also offer a reduced-fee option. We believe that certain obstacles of the health insurance system should not keep us from making real progress with your symptoms.

I do not want to be in therapy forever.

We completely understand! We use effective, evidence-based approaches that have been proven to reduce symptoms within a specific timeframe. With that said, circumstances do vary for everyone, which can contribute to the overall length of depression treatment. Therapy is really teamwork, and we promise to work hard with you so you can become independent of both depression and the need for therapy as soon as possible.
